Born in Essen, artist Stefan Schönberg has been working as a set designer for over ten years and has created sets for, among others, the Cologne and Frankfurt Tatort productions, for Schimanski, the TV feature film series Marie, and the TV crime series Der Elefant.
Schönberg describes his daily work as creative and artistic, but not as art in the true sense. „The scenic design of a film is influenced by the requirements of the script, by the direction, the format itself, or by the producer. Thus, there are already limits to one's own creativity.“
For the Cologne native, working on his Tatort room as part of the 18arts hotel project is therefore all the more a unique opportunity to freely develop his artistic creativity.
In my daily work, I create and design sets for film and television. For example, I designed the set for some "Tatort" episodes filmed in Cologne and Frankfurt. It was therefore natural to implement a film theme at 18Arts, given my work on a crime drama.
The starting point for my room design was a fundamental question: What can a set designer contribute to an art hotel project? How do I approach it when I am freed from all constraints? What remains without the instructions of a script, the ideas of a director or a producer?
