The architect, musician and photographer lives and works in Aachen – as a professor at RWTH Aachen for the field of architecture. During his studies, he was particularly interested in the basic needs of life and living in the smallest of spaces, an interest that he has continued to deepen through numerous journeys to South Caucasian countries in the Near East.
A building designed by him, 2.85 metres wide, received the 1st Prize of the BDA (Federation of German Architects) for modern architecture in 1992. Even though he himself was not a student of the Bauhaus in Dessau, it is obvious that he is influenced by an architectural approach that corresponds to the teachings imparted there in the 1930s. The Eremitage, the smallest room in 18arts, also breathes this spirit.
All the rooms had already been assigned to artists for design, except for the one in the attic. It seemed too small to accommodate the required facilities without a feared sense of confinement, which would overwhelm the guest. I was asked to take a look at it.
The sight of the „building site“ conjured up spontaneous memories of Carl Spitzweg's painting „The Poor Poet“: a freestanding stove in the attic room, an umbrella hanging from the ceiling, a daybed in the corner. The idea was appealing, but extremely problematic in terms of implementation, as the shower or bath, sink, and toilet required for hotel use also had to be accommodated. While technically feasible, it was unreasonable given the spatial constraints. So, „farewell, poor poet“.
