The Cologne cult artist has created many monuments for himself in the city with his banana graffiti. He has designed an entire room for us. We are very proud of this, and the "Paradieszimmer" (Paradise Room) is one of the most popular rooms at 18Arts.

„The banana conquers the art world,“ the Rheinische Merkur proclaimed in 1995. Now, the 40-centimetre-long banana, sprayed by Cologne artist Thomas Baumgärtel, has become a seal of quality and the unofficial logo of the art scene worldwide. It connects 4000 locations globally: from New York to London, Moscow, Vienna, and Berlin.
The artist, born in Rheinberg in 1960, aims to honour museums and galleries with this, while simultaneously creating one of the world's largest presentations of a single artwork.
Baumgärtel has most recently applied his „seal of quality“, in particular, in the Ruhr region. Since 2008, as part of the 2010 European Capital of Culture, he has been working on marking the 60 most interesting art locations in the Ruhr region. In this way, he has already honoured the Folkwang Museum, the Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum, and the Gasometer in Oberhausen with his spray-painted banana.
The co-founder of the Cologne artist collective „Cap Cologne“ works in Cologne-Nippes and designed the Paradise Room for 18Arts.
A few years ago, whilst researching the topic of the Garden of Eden, I came across a theory which questioned the apple as the fruit of paradise. The common image of the apple as the forbidden fruit is supposedly based on a mistranslation of the Latin word „malum“, which can mean both „evil“ and "apple tree". As there were no apple trees in the region where the Garden of Eden is supposed to have been, according to this theory, it must have been a different fruit.
For an exhibition titled „Oh Banana, …you paradisiacal fruit!“ at the Neue Kunst Gallery Michael Oess in Karlsruhe, I had already extensively worked on this theme in 2007 and 2008 and created a series about it.
